i'm new here : what to expect

The dress code

Are you kidding? The only dress code at Voyage is “come as you are”. You can wear your ripped up jeans, T-shirt and Converse, or dress up if you’d prefer. Just be yourself and feel free to come in whatever attire you are most comfortable with. God is not concerned with our outward appearance, rather he looks on the heart. We enjoy creativity and individuality and we believe that God does too!

The people

We are a new church that is just finding "our people." Our goal is to be a multi-faceted community, that is, multi-cultural, multi-generational, multi-ethnic and multi-religious. By “multi-religious” we mean that people from all different religious perspectives can come and explore what it means to be a Christ follower in an accepting, non-judgmental and yet stimulating environment.

The atmosphere

We meet in a school, but we transform the auditorium into a place fit for a Voyage Gathering. Our Gatherings provide opportunities for people to participate in various creative ways rather than being mere spectators (of course, you can simply observe if you wish). During our singing time, we dim the lights to help people focus on God and not on the things around them. We are passionate about the bible and about praising God.

The music

We believe that music is amoral, that is, we believe that no musical style has innate moral qualities. It is the lyrics of a song that make a song moral or immoral. Our musicians take the stage not to entertain or amuse, but to draw people into the presence of God and to facilitate a genuine, mystical encounter with the only true God through Jesus Christ. Unlike many churches, most of our singing follows the message so that we can sing in response to God’s invitation received through the bible.

The teaching

Most often we study books of the bible in a verse-by-verse, expository fashion. We strive to take from the bible its originally intended meaning rather than reading into it what some people might like it to mean. Using this method, God sets the agenda and emphases, and all areas of truth are discussed--not just the areas some might like to emphasize.

Sometimes we will focus a certain topic but we will always base our study on the scriptures to find out what God really says.

We deal both with the easy and the difficult verses, the encouraging and the challenging. When we encounter a mystery or a verse that we do not understand, we do not attempt to explain logically that which is incomprehensible. When there is a debatable matter we often give options for people to consider.

Voyage is an interactive church, so our messages are often in the form of a dialogue (conversation between two or more persons) rather than a strict monologue (one person talking). As teachers arise, we will utilize team teaching. People will often have the opportunity to answer given questions, interject ideas and even ask questions right during the messages. If we don’t know the answer to a question, we will not make up an answer on the spot, but will commit to researching the matter for you.

If you have a bible please bring it with you! If not, we hand out bibles at the Gatherings--feel free to take one home with you!
